When statutory copyright term given by Statute of Anne started to expire at 1731 London booksellers considered to defend the dominant position just by seeking the injunctions from Court of the Chancery for the works by authors who fell outside statute’s protection. Simultaneously London booksellers also lobbied the parliament to extend copyright term given by Statute of Anne. In case known as the Midwinter v. Hamilton, London booksellers also turned to the common law as well as starting thirty year period well known as battle of booksellers. London booksellers argued Statute of Anne supplemented and supported the pre-existing common copyright
law. Dispute was then argued out in many notable cases, which includes Millar and Kincaid, Tonson v Collins, and Donaldson and Beckett. Donaldson v Beckett established that the copyright was the “creature of statute”, that rights and responsibilities in the copyright were decided by the legislation.
